"Bong of the Dead (2011/DVD/MVD Visual)" Review

Review: Bong of the Dead is one of those titles that says I am just another crappy zombie film that is very unoriginal and not worth anyones time. I can gladly say that this film may have that kind of title but is certainly not in the crappy category in my eyes. Well the plot of this film goes as follows. Bong of the Dead opens up with a meteor hitting the ground and a older man discovers it and is infected by what is inside and he gets turned into a flesh eating zombie and from there the infection spreads. Then we get to the 2 main protagonists that consist of 2 stoner guys who after they start to run out of weed they go on a journey to a "danger zone" to retrieve zombie brains to use as fertilizer for their weed growing. Along the way they meet up with a firecracker of a woman and they work their way through the hordes of the dead.

Now I am not trying to say that this film has an original story and that it breaks ground because it doesn't. What it does do is entertain. I was seriously entertained from the very first scene all the way to the very last one. Like you would expect Bong of the Dead is a horror comedy that leans more towards the comedy side, but does not hold back when it comes to the gore and blood. Also you do get some zombie boobs added into the mix, which is strangely hot to see! The more original elements of this film compared to most other zombie films out there is that you get a villian who is a zombie leader of his own army that is determined to fight back against the uninfected, and yes he does talk. Also the use of zombie brains as fertilizer to make some killer weed is something I have yet to run across in a film prior to this.
When it comes to the gore and special effects what you get is a mixture of some cheaply done CGI mixed with some very well done practical effects. The both mixed together works well for the most part. Now the CGI does look very bad and cheap from time to time, but not to the point of bothering me because I do look at it a way for the director being able to do somethings on a very low budget. My personal favorite part of gore is when they strap lawnmowers to the front of a truck and run over some zombies with it, it reminded me alot of the lawnmower scene from Dead Alive (aka Braindead). Hell the film is just about as gory as Dead Alive is! Especially the very bloody stand off scene between the zombies and the living.
One last thing that I will say about this film is that it has an ending that no one will expect, I didn't and I can guarantee you won't! Overall this was an excellent film that walks the line perfectly between horror and comedy and is a must see for fans of this sub-genre of zombie films!
