"Fright Night 2: New Blood (2013/Blu-ray + DVD Combo/20th Century Fox)" Review

The original Fright Night is one of my favorite vampire films of all time and it was followed up with a pretty cool sequel. Now a couple of years ago along came the remake of Fright Night which I avoided and continue to avoid. Now when I had a chance to review the sequel to the remake I for some odd reason wanted to see it. I think the biggest thing that caught my interest was the fact that there is a female vampire this time around. Now the only thing to wonder is was this film any good and is it worth checking out? Let the autopsy begin!

By day Gerri Dandridge is a sexy professor, but by night she transforms into a real-life vampire with an unquenchable thirst for human blood. So when a group of high school students travel abroad to study in Romania, they find themselves ensnared in her chilling web of lust and terror. Charlie and “Evil” Ed must stop Gerri from drinking and bathing in the blood of a “new moon virgin,” which just so happens to be Charlie’s ex-girlfriend, Amy. They enlist help from Peter Vincent, the vampire hunting host of a reality show called "Fright Night," to drive a stake through Gerri’s plan and save Amy from a fate far worse than death.

I went into this film not expecting too much and I have to say what I got was something more entertaining than I'd ever expected. Now the biggest thing I wish they would of done is not used the title "Fright Night 2" instead they should of named it something else. The reason I say this is because it works well as it's own and not attached to a previous film. Now I did like it, but I don't want you to think it's anything amazing, original, or groundbreaking. I found this film to be simply entertaining. When the film started all I kept thinking was that this is just another bland horror film but as it went on I started to really get into it and actually enjoy it. There are a few spots that simply were great and that includes one thing I have never seen before.
The characters are really nothing other than typical. You have the standard shy guy who has a love interest and also no one believes him about the teacher being a vampire, then there is the ex-girlfriend, and then there is the smart-ass friend who is vulgar. As far as the three main young protagonists they are quite simple, but along with them is the "doing it for the money" Peter Vincent who acts like he hunts down vampires and monsters but really does it for the money and women, and also there is the vampire herself Countess Bathory. Let's just say that these characters have been seen before.
The gore in this film is a mixture between both CGI and practical. Even with the CGI I think the gore was pretty damn cool. There is one effect that I loved more than anything and that is when Peter Vincent takes Ed after he chases to a vamp and he starts slamming his head into a huge cross tattoo on his chest and they show it from the view of the tattoo. It is hard describe that effect, but when you see it I know you will get what I mean. If you want some pretty cool gore than look no further and you do get alot of T&A!
Overall this is a film that really should not of been made, but for some reason I still enjoyed it. It does have some entertaining things going on. Now I can only recommend this as a rental and if you dig it then I say pick it up. Most horror fans may just hate this film and I can see why, but I personally found things I enjoyed and it was enough for me to enjoy and be entertained.

I give it 3 out of 5 scalpels!
